Javier Milei cancels his trip to Mexico and his participation in the CPAC.
Javier Milei, president of Argentina, canceled his trip to Mexico, in which, in addition to meeting with businessmen in Mexico City, he was to participate in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
According to the Argentine newspaper La Nación, sources from Milei’s government confirmed that the Argentine president will be in the city of Rosario next Friday, when he was going to be in Mexico City.
In the morning, a spokesman for the Casa Rosada had confirmed, although later another spokesman questioned the trip, before the cancellation was announced.
This occurs in the midst of the confrontation that exists between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Javier Milei. Spokesman Manuel Adorni of the Casa Rosada confirmed in the morning that there was no invitation or request for the Argentine president to meet with López Obrador at the National Palace.
Last week, the president had already ruled out meeting with Milei, although he clarified that there was no problem with the Argentine ruler visiting the country.
“I do not agree with his way of thinking and his way of being; however, he is free and one thing is the Government of Mexico, and another thing is the people of Mexico, and our people have always been very hospitable, fraternal and respectful,” said López Obrador, who in recent months called Milei a “conservative fascist.”
Claudia Sheinbaum, president-elect, also stressed that the Argentine president’s visit was not an official visit and considered that the libertarian politician “is free” to travel to the CPAC.
The CPAC, of American origin, is an annual political conference of social actors who uphold conservative positions and is considered one of the political arms of the Republican presidential candidate and former president of the United States, Donald Trump (2017-2021).
Milei’s trips to countries governed by parties with ideologies contrary to his political vision, as is the case of Mexico, are usually aimed at seeking investments for Argentina and meetings with opposition leaders and rarely include bilateral meetings with heads of state.
