Companies and small businesses in southern Quintana Roo indicated that the constant road blockades against the Tren Maya caused them million-dollar losses.
The president of the National Chamber of the Processing Industry (Canacintra) in Quintana Roo, Marcial Cervera Delgado, explained that sections 6 and 7 of the railway project have been especially conflictive, causing not only the delay in its inauguration but also problems for the commercial distribution chain.
“We are sure that when the Tren Maya starts working, the great benefits will outweigh the inconveniences, but for the moment, many of our members suffer the collateral damage of these demonstrations,” declared the business leader.
He gave as an example that the routes to Felipe Carrillo Puerto and José María Morelos, as well as the one to Xpujil, have been up to four hours late: two departures and another two entry, which makes it difficult for suppliers to transfer supplies or the export of products to those regions.
“However, we are all holding on because a work of this magnitude usually represents inconveniences. We have to work twice as hard so that once they complete the Tren Maya, we can enjoy the reward,” he declared.
According to the information provided by the federal government, it will start in early September. However, the delays in many parts of the sections between Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Chetumal and between Chetumal and Escárcega are still visible. In addition, the constant blockades on the federal highway by the rural population affected by the heavy machinery related to the Tren Maya have become a constant in the last year. Every week, there are at least three demonstrations in the area, according to information from official authorities.
