The director of the state coordination of Civil Protection of Yucatan (Procivy), Enrique Alcocer Basto, announced the intensification of monitoring of the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, at the beginning of the period of greatest activity of hurricane formation.
In an interview, he acknowledged that from now on the surveillance of any phenomenon that could become a tropical cyclone is reinforced, since in September the most active stage of system formation will begin, after the experience of previous seasons.
“It is when the most favorable conditions exist for cyclones to form that come from Africa and that, due to the remoteness that we have in the state of Yucatan, have affected us in these times as is the case of Gilberto, in 1988, or Isidoro, in 2002, they are tropical cyclones that are characterized by being intense,” he explained.
He recalled that for this season, the National Meteorological Service anticipated the formation of at least 23 named tropical systems for the Atlantic, the sector to which the state belongs, although 5 have already formed so far this season, which began last June.
One of these, hurricane “Beryl” passed over Yucatan, although it did not cause major damage, although the authorities reiterate that they are maintaining vigilance, as there are 18 potential cyclones that will form during the rest of the season.
Likewise, the state official recognized that there are points in Yucatan that are vulnerable to the onslaught of a cyclone.
