Members of the Restaurant Association of Valladolid Yucatán (Arvay) and the Tourist Service Providers of the Historic Center demonstrated in the corridors of the Municipal Palace because Mayor Alfredo Fernández Arceo refused to grant a permit to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to work in the city center to prevent more blackouts.

The blackouts have left several businesses without electricity from Saturday, July 27, to Monday, July 29.

Blackouts in the Historic Center have been reported for a few months and became more constant with the start of the holiday season. In several cases, they cause problems, especially in the sectors where most businesses are.

On Saturday the 27, the situation was complicated because more than 15 businesses, hotels, restaurants, ice cream shops, cafes, and handcraft stores on 39th Street between 38th and 40th Streets in the city center were without electricity.

CFE personnel came that same Saturday to address the problem, but Municipal Police officers prevented the workers from working.

Annoyed, some businessmen demonstrated on July 29 against the municipal authorities and closed the intersection of 39th and 38th streets. They demand that the electricity service be improved.

Enrique Ayora Méndez, administrator of the “Tía Micha” hotel, stated that most tourists canceled their reservations and had about $80,000 in losses.

Restaurant businessmen commented that they also lost profits over the weekend because tourism did not reach their businesses due to a lack of electricity.

In the case of the “Las Campanas” restaurant, owned by the Rivero family, an electric power plant was contracted to serve the visitors who arrived last weekend.

Alfonso Rivero Flores, leader of the businessmen of the center, expressed that Mayor Alfredo Fernández Arceo “is an arrogant and arrogant person who does not think about the damage he is causing to the businessmen of the city center by not granting the corresponding permits to the CFE to carry out the repairs.”

He recalled that the blackouts had occurred for ten months. A month ago, the problem worsened, so they demanded that the CFE carry out the necessary work. However, the CFE responded that the authorities did not allow them to do the repair work.

The work will involve opening canals to repair what is necessary because the energy supply is underground. They must open the canals on sidewalks and streets, so now they are waiting for the CFE to start the needed work.
