Joaquin Diaz Mena, the incoming governor of Yucatan, has expressed his intention to boost tourism in Progreso by attracting cruise ships to the port. In a recent Facebook and TikTok Live session on August 19, 2024, he revealed that he met with executives from Carnival Corporation in Mérida, Yucatán, whose operations are based in the United States, Britain, and Panama.

Díaz Mena stated that his goal is to strengthen security, sports, culture, and healthcare in Yucatan while also increasing tourism in Progreso. He acknowledged that this strategy would improve the international reputation and visibility of the port town for potential foreign visitors.

By planning a possible agreement with Carnival Corporation, Díaz Mena hopes to enhance the appeal of Progreso as a tourist destination, ultimately boosting local economic growth. His efforts aim to position Yucatan as a major player in the global cruise industry.
