According to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the works implemented in the remodeling of the Plaza Grande lack the appropriate regulations for their implementation.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) of Yucatan declared that the works being carried out in the Plaza Grande of the Historic Center of Merida do not comply with the conditions of aesthetics and timelessness in a space that is classified as a Historical Heritage of Yucatan and Mexico.

This suspension of the remodeling works includes new modern-style benches, a flagpole, a water fountain, gardens, stairs, excavations, and the removal of trees.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 14, INAH staff presented a document to those in charge of the work which established that the works in the Plaza Grande are classified as a violation of the Federal Law of Archaeological, Artistic, and Historical Monuments.

This Law establishes that the owners of properties of Historical Monuments must preserve and restore them with prior authorization from the institution. Additionally, a summons was presented to the authorities in charge of the remodeling to respond to the irregularities.

Therefore, the remodeling work on the Plaza Grande is closed until it is adjusted to the INAH’s instructions. However, the rest of the work on the Plaza Grande and its surroundings will continue as normal.
