Investors opt for Texas due to high energy costs in Mexico

The price of a megawatt-hour in Mexico is up to 5,000 pesos, while in Texas it is only 300 pesos.

Foreign investors who initially considered Mexico to establish their plants are now opting for Texas, due to the high costs of electricity in some regions of the country.

In Mexico, the price of a megawatt-hour (MWh) can reach up to 5 thousand pesos, while in Texas it is approximately 300 pesos, said José Buganza, director of the consulting firm Enegence.

In the framework of the presentation of the Energy Efficiency Guide for Nuevo León, which aims to reduce industrial electricity consumption in the state by at least 10 percent, he pointed out that the contrasting costs of this resource are what scare away some investments in Mexico.

Jorge Arrambide Montemayor, head of the Regulatory Committee of the Energy Cluster of Nuevo Leon, agreed that just yesterday the cost per kilowatt-hour was 15 cents in Texas, equivalent to about 300 pesos.

Jorge Buganza considered that the cost of electricity in some regions of Mexico is high because there are many electricity “islands” that generate energy, but lack transmission, distribution, and transformation infrastructure.

He assured that the same situation occurs in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua.

Eduardo Sanchez, director of the State Agency of Renewable Energy of Nuevo Leon, estimated that in the case of Nuevo Leon, the electricity demand will increase in the order of 1,200 megawatts annually.
