The Pier Six in the Port of Progreso has completed its reparation. However, maintenance work is continuing, as reported by Alejandro Guerrero Lozano, president of the Association of Export Maquiladoras of Yucatán (Index).

The problem is solved for now because they repaired the initial fracture of Pier Six. In addition, approval came from Customs Central to use dock seven for containers, so today, we have no delays, but we hope that the works will be over between now and December, according to Guerrero Lozano.

The export leader pointed out that when the dock closed, there were economic effects on the sector.

Whatever did not reach Yucatán went to Veracruz, then bringing it by land cost 70 or 80 thousand pesos, plus the risk of robberies on the road. We took exports through Veracruz, Altamira, or Manzanillo, which increased from around 2,500 to 3,000 dollars per container. If we add it weekly, we lose more than 300 thousand dollars, but we overcome that situation now, said Guerrero.

He explained they did not lose exports to the United States. The main problem was exports and imports to and from Europe and the Asian continent.

“Maersk and MSC, which are the large shipping companies that come to Yucatán to export to Asia and Europe, stopped coming because the draft of the other docks is not enough. We had more than 100 containers delayed because large ships could not enter the dock. MSC sent a smaller ship that could dock at Pier Five. The containers were loaded and taken to a Caribbean port. Then, they transferred them to a larger ship and solved the initial problem.

Finally, he said that the repairs on the dock will continue until December 17, but that in the first half of 2025, they are expected to work on the other part of the dock.
