The Secretariat of Culture and Arts of Yucatán (Sedeculta) recognized the most important musical genres in the state and the emerging ones. After creating a mapping of cultural industries, supported by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFDC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the agency reiterated the importance of supporting the music sector.
“We have a lot of cumbia, but more than that, we have a lot of trova, which continues to be one of the most important pillars. We are identifying that young people are innovating trova with new technologies,” said Ana Ceballos, Artistic Development and Cultural Management director at Sedeculta.
Among other genres produced in the region and currently emerging are salsa and rap, presented at the Meeting of Professionals in the Musical Sector in 2023. At Sedeculta, they hope the number of artists will increase during the 2024 Meeting from August 12 to 16.
“At this meeting last year, we had the opportunity to have the samples. We saw these new talents from municipalities exhibiting super innovative works in trova and rap, and they are all Yucatecan.”
The mapping, which covered cultural industries such as crafts and dance, also strove to visualize those who work alongside the artists.
“We do not focus on identifying only the artists but on the entire sector that the world of music involves,” said Ana Ceballos. This mapping helps authorities see where artists are and what they are producing. “This diagnosis gives information about where to start looking for talent. The new authorities already know where to start working in the music sector. There are artists, but they all have divergent needs. Some need to circulate, others are already more developed, some are emerging, and some need production information.”
