A couple of weeks after the results of investigations into the presence of glyphosate in two police stations in Tizimín, parents from the Cabichén community are concerned.

It was in the communities of Cabichén and Dzonot Carretero where, a year ago, sampling was done in schools to determine if there were toxic agrochemicals in their bodies.

The surprise was great for those who participated in the research because there was one positive case in each community of the 111 samples.

The news began to cause interest among the residents of the Cabichén community, and they were concerned. Volunteers from the Agua y Conciencia Civil Association went to Cabichén to clear up their doubts.

One of the big questions of the mothers of the Conafe community kindergarten was: How did glyphosate reach our children? Therefore, the head of the group, Gamaliel Canto Dzul, said that it is a multifactorial issue and necessary to prepare a work plan.

He told them he would not reveal the names of those who tested positive for confidentiality reasons because it is also about everyone participating and raising awareness.

Canto stated that the fact that a preschool child has tested positive does not mean a terminal illness. Laboratory studies can reveal if there is any kidney or liver damage not only in the students but in the entire population.

Canto Dzul said he did not have plans prepared as he needed to know how willing they would be to participate. He added that the number of positive cases detected is low if compared nationally, but the reality is that there should not be

They need to know that the fact that there is no presence in others does not mean that there are no more cases.  The important thing here is that when a study is done at the population level, the sample is what represents the entire community.”

“Which means that of 52 samples taken in the community, 2 come out positive, meaning that we have 4.5% of the population that could have glyphosate,” he said.

He specified that the objective is to work as a team and develop a work plan to find a solution to what we have today and prevent what could happen.
