The Yucatán Peninsula lost at least 705,683 acres of forest land in four years, from 2019 to 2023, according to the Assessment of deforestation in the Yucatán Peninsula carried out by the Mexican Civil Council for Sustainable Forestry under the technical direction of Dr. Edward Ellis.

As indicated in this evaluation, the state of Campeche is the most affected by deforestation, with a loss of 69,883 acres annually. Yucatán lost 68,000 acres deforested annually, and Quintana Roo lost 36,065 acres annually for the same period.

Specifically, in Yucatán, the municipalities of Tizimín, Panabá, Tekax, and Sucilá recorded the largest deforested areas in the state.

The destruction of the forest advances together with the expansion of agroindustry and livestock, the real estate and tourism industry, the mega works of transportation logistics infrastructure and energy projects, among other processes aligned with logics and strategies of deterritorialization and reterritorialization, the study points out.
