Sefotur indicated that the State has a solid foundation to continue on the path to consolidating the state of Yucatán as a world-class destination for national and foreign visitors.

About to close the 2018-2024 state administration, the Secretary of Tourism Promotion, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, highlighted the significant progress that this industry has had in the last five years and pointed out that Yucatan already has a solid foundation to continue on the path of consolidation as a World-Class destination for national and foreign visitors.

In a telephone interview, the state official specified that from year one to year five in which the tourism indicators were fully measured, the State has registered growth in several areas, such as 34 percent more in the arrival of visitors and an 82.4 percent increase in economic spillover.

Michelle Fridman, the head of the State Government’s Secretariat for Tourism Development (Sefotur) indicated that in certain areas where there was a great need, such as ecotourism, there is a growth of 198 percent. She summarized that these results benefit all the actors involved in the industry.

She added that in addition, in recent years the state’s tourism offering was decentralized, which not only includes Mérida, since it went from having 2 to 7 magical towns. “It is part of the strategy that we set out from the beginning, to be able to decentralize tourism to benefit more families,” she said.

Finally, the State Secretary of Tourism Promotion highlighted that a little more than 11 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Yucatán comes from tourism and that in each municipality there is some family that directly or indirectly depends on the visitor. He exemplified the “Aldeas Mayas” project and the magical neighborhood of La Ermita, which are added to the more than 250 new products, which together with the existing ones, already reflect more than 500.
