The Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the US Department of State, Brian Nichols, shared the position of the US ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, on the concerns of the Judicial Reform, assuring that both countries must “work together as partners and equals to promote security and prosperity” in the region.
“Ken Salazar and I share a deep respect for the sovereignty of Mexico. The United States and Mexico must work together as partners and equals to promote security and prosperity in North America. As partners and friends, we share our concerns about the proposed constitutional reforms,” Nichols shared on his social networks along with the diplomat’s statement.

Ambassador Ken Salazar said that the reform “threatens” the commercial relationship and is a risk to “democracy.” This caused President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to declare a “pause” in relations between Mexico and the United States on Tuesday, calling it an “interventionist, unfortunate and imprudent” statement, insisting that the objective of the reform is to combat corruption and not to take over justice.
The initiative will be debated during the next legislative session, which will begin on September 1, in which Morena will have large majorities that would avoid having to negotiate with the opposition.
