The Yucatecan Sofía Morán Mena, coordinator of Youth in “Va Por la Tierra”, will represent Mexico in Colombia, in a public consultation that will take place in Bogotá on September 24 and 25, and that brings together environmental defenders from various regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. This is organized by the United Nations and the guests will talk about the Arjus Agreement.
She specified that the Arjus Agreement is like the Escazú Agreement, but in Europe, speaks about the importance of governments guaranteeing citizen participation in decision-making regarding projects with environmental impact and environmental justice.
“Many European companies are beginning to establish themselves in Mexico, Yucatán is booming in this regard, these businesses are having an environmental impact in our regions in a certain way, and that is why we were called to ask ourselves what is happening, how we are affected as environmental defenders, a dangerous profession in Mexico and various places in Latin America,” she indicated.
Morán Mena said that the clearest example is renewable energy in Yucatán. Many wind and solar park companies are coming to the region, and new companies are coming to generate electricity, but the reality is that they are using spaces that belong to the citizens. We are experiencing the effects of Indigenous communities being stripped of their territories.
