A Yucatecan stands out in mountain climbing

Adrenaline is one of the main driving forces for Ángel Alfonso Rodríguez to dare to climb so many meters and continue with mountaineering.

A few weeks ago, Rodríguez climbed one of the highest mountains in America, the Illimani, located in Bolivia at 6,460 meters above sea level.

The Yucatecan pointed out that this mountain has a 70% slope. That is why he practically has to climb four points simultaneously using his hands and feet. Now, Rodríguez intends to travel to Nepal to climb higher.

It was two years ago when the young man began to practice this hobby, “an extreme sport very little explored here in the state.”

For this sport, the body needs a process of adaptation due to the meters he is climbing, he indicated. As he recalled, it was not difficult for him to adapt to the sport, and indicated that “his body has something to be able to assimilate the changes in pressure when climbing.”

Rodríguez recalled that in 2023 he climbed mountains over 5,000 meters high in Ecuador.

To climb these types of peaks you have to prepare at least three days in advance since the body needs to acclimatize to the meters you are climbing.

For those interested in mountaineering, he recommends starting with sports such as swimming and cycling, as well as practicing cardio in the gym, which is essential to be able to withstand changes in height and pressure when climbing.

“Many times, as they climb, their organs contract, and many times the climbers do not control their breathing and this affects their health.”

The routes, he added, are usually painful due to the enormous effort they make. “Although they often say: ‘I will never do it again’, they always look for a new goal.” To those curious about this sport, he asks them to “lose their fear of changes and always dare to go for more.”
