Neighbors of the Portal San Pedro subdivision held a sit-in and blockade on the Mérida-Cancún highway in protest of a power outage caused by drilling and damaging underground medium-voltage cables during construction work.
The settlers affected by the lack of electricity service reported that, after reporting the incident, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) told them they would resolve the problem within two hours, but there was no response.
Fearing their reports would not be heeded, they organized and blocked the road.
The traffic cut was 600 meters from the San Pedro Noh Pat bridge, affecting both the entrance road to Mérida and the exit lane towards Cancún, generating intense road chaos as vehicles of different sizes were waiting to be able to travel. The line of cars and trucks was approximately 2 kilometers long.
Despite attempts at dialogue by the drivers, the protesters refused to stop the blockade until they restored the power.
Agents from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) and National Guard personnel arrived at the site to speed up traffic in the area and thus clear the road. On social media, drivers suggested not taking alternate routes to avoid getting stuck in road chaos.
