Members of a family from Ticul got a big scare when they found a black widow spider nest in the patio of their house, located in the San Joaquín neighborhood.

The discovery occurred in an abandoned chicken coop in the house, where the family noticed a nest of the feared arachnid.

For this reason, the family asks the authorities to take action on the matter and attend to the outbreak to avoid a tragedy.

The black widow is among the best-known spiders because of its dangerous venom and peculiar appearance.

The most representative species is the southern black widow (Latrodectus mactans), which is distinguished by the red hourglass-shaped spot on its abdomen.

Its venom is up to 15 times more powerful than the rattlesnake. However, the effects on humans are not usually fatal in most cases. Symptoms include severe muscle pain, nausea, and paralysis of the diaphragm, which can make breathing difficult.

Despite this, most bitten people do not suffer consequences.

Victims who may face the risk are young children, older adults, and people with pre-existing health problems for whom the bite could be fatal. However, deaths are rare.

Fortunately, black widows are not aggressive and usually bite only in self-defense, when accidentally crushed.
