A total of 170 cases of infection by the Mpox virus (previously called monkeypox) have been registered in Yucatan from 2022 to date. This year, eight probable cases have been reported, but none have been confirmed, according to the report of the General Directorate of Epidemiology of the Federal Ministry of Health.

Of the cases reported in the entity, 162 were treated on an outpatient basis, five required hospitalization, and two died. Of the total cases, 160 were detected in 2022 and 10 in 2023.

Emergency medicine specialists pointed out that deaths related to Mpox are mostly because patients with this disease have skin wounds that are not treated in time and become infected, leading to the development of generalized sepsis, which ends with the death of the person.

The Ministry of Health indicated that this disease lasts an average of 21 days, and is transmitted by direct contact with the secretions of a sick person through mucous membranes or skin lesions, respiratory droplets, and objects contaminated with bodily fluids. It can be prevented by avoiding direct physical contact with sick people or those who are suspected of having the disease. Sexual contact is an activity that must be taken into account since it is transmitted by very close contact between two or more people.

Since the appearance of Mpox in Mexico, 4,153 cases have already been confirmed, distributed throughout the country, according to the “Informative Bulletin No. 1 Current Situation of Mpox, Mexico.”

Regarding the distribution by sex assigned at birth, the predominance in men is 97 percent, and the age group 30 to 34 is the most affected with an incidence rate of 1.07 per 10 thousand inhabitants with 1,092 of the total confirmed cases.

As of Monday, September 2, the largest number of cases was concentrated in Mexico City, with 2,156 infected, 51.91 percent of the total, followed by Jalisco, with 413 infected, 9.94 percent, and the State of Mexico, with 170 confirmed, 8.88 percent. These three states account for 70.74 percent of the country’s total.

In contrast, from 2020 to 2024, Durango has only had three positive cases; six in Colima, a similar number in Zacatecas, seven in Sonora, and eight in Michoacán.

At the moment, in the Yucatan Peninsula, there are 450 cases, 10.84 percent, making it the third most affected region.
