Hotel occupancy in Cozumel falls short during National Holidays

Hotel occupancy in Cozumel increased only 10% during the long weekend of the Mexican Independence festivities, going from 40 to 51%.

Although there was a slight rebound, the hotel sector considers that the lack of promotion of the island continues to be a key factor for the poor tourism performance.

Beatriz Tinajero Tarriba, president of the Cozumel Hotel Association, pointed out that, despite the increase, the results were not as expected.

Current hotel occupancy is below the levels reached in 2023 when 50% occupancy was recorded on those dates.

The lack of focused promotion in Cozumel has influenced this year’s low season to be less favorable, even before major sporting events.

Tinajero Tarriba mentioned that there is hope for a significant rebound with the arrival of IronMan 70.3, which will be held on September 22. This sporting event, which will attract more than two thousand triathletes, could improve the hotel and tourism situation on the island.

The president of the Hotel Association highlighted the importance of promoting Cozumel as a destination with its own identity within the Mexican Caribbean campaign.

In addition, he highlighted the success of the Cozumel Vivo Fest, which attracted tourists with high purchasing power interested in culture and spiritual well-being.

This festival, which they plan to repeat, is emerging as a strategy to attract new segments of tourists.

Tinajero Tarriba confirmed that they have already begun collaborations with the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council to create a new image of Cozumel.

This strategy seeks to highlight the unique attractions of the island and improve overnight tourism to recover the arrival of more national and international tourists.
