John slams Mexican State of Guerrero not once but twice as hurricane

After lashing Mexico’s southern Pacific coast earlier this week, Tropical Storm John is on track to strengthen into a hurricane and slam again into the Mexican mainland.

That’s according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center on Wednesday.

In Oaxaca, locals were wading through floodwaters from John’s initial hit.

Several people were killed from floods and landslides.

A resident, Felix Herrera, said people lost many crops like corn and papaya, and their belongings in the floodwaters.

Soldiers and National Guard workers cleared the road of debris, rocks, and tree trunks.

Storm John moved back into the Pacific Ocean early Wednesday. While it battered Guerrero’s southern Costa Chica region on Tuesday, John is now forecast to hit its northern coastline, the Costa Grande.

Mexico’s government on Wednesday issued a hurricane warning for communities on its Pacific coast.

State authorities said thousands of homes in the resort city of Acapulco were at risk.

And people in low-lying areas should immediately move to shelters.

Last year, Acapulco was devastated by Hurricane Otis, which killed more than 50 people and left some $15 billion in damages.
