In September, important astronomical events will adorn the Yucatan sky, such as meteor showers, a partial lunar eclipse, and the autumn equinox, according to Bruno Pérez, president of the Astronomical Society of UADY.

He said that two types of meteor showers will appear in the sky, the Orionids and the Southern Taurids; the first, he said, come from Halley’s comet and are called that because they seem to come from the constellation of Orion and can be observed from September 23 to November 22. However, their highest point will be on October 20 or 21.

Regarding the Southern Taurids, he said that they will be present from September 23 to December 8 or 9, and their name is because they seem to come from the constellation of Taurus.

“In the case of the Taurids, it is not so abundant since the maximum that occurs is about four or five meteors per hour, while the Orionids have a frequency of about 180 meteors per hour.”

In addition, with the partial lunar eclipse, a part of the Earth’s natural satellite will be in darkness, and that will be on September 18.

The last astronomical event will be the autumn equinox, which will occur on September 22. He recalled that this phenomenon is when day and night last the same. They last 12 and 12 hours, at that point, the sun illuminates almost equally the north and the south of the planet. He explained that practically all of these events can be observed well from Yucatan, ensuring that it is done from places with little or no light pollution.
