The athlete from Guadalajara, Jalisco obtained the best time in para swimming at the Paris 2024 Sports Day on September 4.
Castorena reached the final of men’s para-swimming in 50 meters breaststroke SB2, where he achieved a time of 59.41, followed by swimmer Ismail Barlov (1:02.74), from Bosnia and Herzegovina; and Australian Grant Patterson 1:04.54
In the same category, Mexicans Cristopher Tronco competed, who finished fourth (1:05.26), and Marcos Zárate, sixth (1:10.73).
José Arnulfo Castorena is a 46-year-old para athlete considered one of the “great stars of Mexico”, according to the official Paris 2024 website.
With this victory, the Guadalajara native has four gold medals in the Paralympics. He also won in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Tokyo 2020 and has competed in this sport since he was 16 years old.
Castorena has a congenital disease that prevented the development of his lung, left arm, and lower limbs; his mother died while giving birth and he had little support from his father. In addition, he grew up in a family where there were drug addiction problems, so he found an outlet in para-swimming at the CODE club in Guadalajara.
