The president of the local delegation of the National Chamber of the Fishing and Aquaculture Industry of Yucatan, Enrique Sánchez Sánchez, stated that from August 1st to September 4th it is estimated that 6,000 to 6,500 tons of octopus have been captured, and they are waiting for official information to confirm the exact figure.

He said that the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fishing (CONAPESCA) has not published on its official website the data on how the capture of the mollusk is going; but according to the social sector and the industrial sector, between 6,000 and 6,500 tons of the species should have already been reached.

He announced that the larger vessels are preparing to go out to sea this weekend and will take two weeks to return to the beaches, bringing mollusks with them, hoping that they will reach good volumes of the species.

He explained that the price of a kilo of octopus remains between 110 and 120 pesos. If there is more volume of the species, the price would drop a little more, but even so, the cost of food is good for the social and industrial sectors that are satisfied with the start of the pulping.

Finally, Sánchez Sánchez specified that they are in talks with businessmen from Europe and the United States to export octopus to the old continent and the neighboring country to the north, hoping to achieve good economic agreements; meanwhile, the octopus is sold in the national and local market.
