Originally conceived as a cultural space, where there would be artistic presentations and visual arts exhibitions, the Parque de las Américas is today, 79 years after its founding, a place of leisure and fun.
Located in the heart of the García Ginerés neighborhood, the park is one of the favorite meeting places for Merida residents, especially at night, when fast food and snack vendors set up shop.
It has become common for people of different ages to meet in the park to enjoy some Marquesitas, Esquites with everything, or the classic tortas from “Don Beto.”
The specialist considered that the park, like any urban and architectural complex, should be recognized based on its layout, its scale, the design of its elements, and its construction materials.
Given this, the specialist emphasizes that its declaration as an Artistic Monument Zone should be promoted before the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (Inbal).
“If the incoming administration decides to remodel the Parque de las Américas, please do not make the same mistake as in the Plaza Grande de Mérida!” Said the expert.
The place should be kept as it is, and not repeat “the mistakes that have been made in the Plaza Grande: the removal of trees, the change of pavement, benches…”.
And, he points out, the entire park, including the benches, the paths, and the fountains… it was all designed specifically for this park.
