A group of workers from the Judicial Branch of the Federation entered the Congress of Yucatan by force on Thursday, September 12th, to prevent the discussion of the recently approved judicial reform.

The protesters, who rejected the reform, broke into the Plenary of the local Congress amidst slogans of “traitors”, pulling and pushing. They intended to prevent the deputies from discussing the reform, even though it was not included in the agenda of the day.

Although the authorities tried to contain the workers, the crowd managed to access the premises. In a video, a protester can be heard imploring the suspension of the session, however, it continued while the workers demanded to be heard by the legislators.

The protest arose after the recent approval of the reform in the Senate of the Republic, where it was supported with 86 votes in favor and 41 against. The reform proposes the election of judges, magistrates, and ministers by popular vote, and is now being reviewed by local congresses for final approval.

Finally, the judicial reform was approved by 21 state congresses via Fast Track. The states are Yucatán, Oaxaca, Tlaxcala, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, Nayarit, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Colima, Morelos, Durango, Puebla, Campeche, Sinaloa, Guerrero, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, Mexico City, State of Mexico and Sonora.
