The Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, Bernardo Cueto, stated that despite averaging 70% hotel occupancy this summer, there was no real collapse. According to Cueto, if the new hotel rooms and Airbnb accommodations added recently are subtracted, occupancy would have exceeded 90%.
Quintana Roo currently has 133 thousand hotel rooms, a figure significantly higher than the 110 thousand in previous seasons. Cueto highlighted that Airbnb units must be considered since they also receive millions of tourists who leave an economic impact on the state.
To maintain economic activity during the low season, the officials mentioned several international events are scheduled in the coming days. Cancun will receive the arrival of 5 thousand visitors for an event, while Tulum and Playa del Carmen will have the same. These events and conventions will help avoid the so-called “solidarity layoffs” that usually affect workers in the tourism sector every year.
The projections for the 2024 National Holidays are encouraging, with estimated occupancy of 73.6% in Riviera Maya, 71.6% in Cancún, and 64.3% in Mérida. An occupancy of 61% is expected in Isla Mujeres and 49.9% in Cozumel.
