Taxi drivers complain about poor road conditions from Yucatán to the Riviera Maya and Tulum

Taxi drivers and private vehicle drivers who travel constantly to Tulum and the Riviera Maya reported that the Chemax-Cobá highway is very deteriorated, full of potholes, and, therefore, a risk of accidents.

Some people reported on social networks how deteriorated the road is. Some people even painted around the potholes so drivers could see and avoid them.

However, on Wednesday, September 4, a Nissan Tsuru got off the road when its driver, as he explained, maneuvered to avoid the potholes but lost control of the vehicle. Four people, members of the same family, suffered various injuries in the accident.

Taxi driver Miguel Canché Noh, who travels to Tulum almost daily, said that the 32-kilometer road that connects Chemax with Cobá is full of potholes.

He indicated that the taxi drivers who travel there daily already know how to avoid the cavities. The danger is still latent, especially for tourists and other drivers who do not work in public transportation services. He points out that other accidents have already occurred due to potholes.

The taxi driver commented that of the 32 kilometers, 28 belong to Yucatán, whose government must order to repair that area. Four kilometers belong to Quintana Roo, “but the entire stretch is in poor condition.”

Added to the potholes is the problem of the weeds on the sides invading the road. Because of the latter, drivers go almost in the middle. The road does not have any stripes dividing the return lanes.

He indicated that traveling on that road is a permanent danger because it is busy. The repair of the road is urgent, concluded the taxi driver, who travels to Tulum every day.
