The new Dispensa shipyard for the maintenance and repair of vessels and naval artifacts in the Deep Water Port in Progreso not only opens the door to Yucatán to the marine industry but also to new sectors that represent the state opportunity to attract more investment, chains of supplies and, consequently, economic development and generation of better-paid jobs, stated representatives of the private initiative.
This new project is considered the third of its kind in Mexico. It will be able to serve up to 6 ships simultaneously, serving the Gulf of Mexico, the East Coast of the United States, and the Caribbean. The project is strategically located and offers privileged access to key trade routes connecting North and Central America.
The president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), Alejandro Gómory Martínez, highlighted that this shipyard offers the state the opportunity to attract new industries that we need today.
“This type of industry is closely related to the manufacturing industry, which is what we are in because the skills required in other things are developed. The latter puts us in the spotlight, especially what we have been looking for the East Coast of the United States, being the closest to us and this, together with the expansion of the port, already puts us in more favorable conditions,” highlighted the also president of the National Chamber of the Processing Industry (Canacintra).
This work consists of a 150 linear meter dock and a 1,100 square meter workshop, offices, and spaces that will allow afloat repairs to be carried out efficiently.
It will have six positions to be able to receive vessels up to 120 meters long and up to 4,500 tons, a ramp, a lifting car, a transfer pit, offices, and workshops, as well as a 310 linear meter dock, which puts us in a position optimal to meet a wide range of needs in the naval sector.
The president of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Mérida (Canaco-Servitur), Levy Abraham Macari, agreed that this project contributes to the industrialization of the state, in addition to being of great benefit to the people of Progreso since it is very likely that they will require specialized labor.
“It is another investment for Yucatán, it will focus on the maintenance of large ships and boats and that will always be positive for the state because, in the end, it is something that will bring investments and economic benefits,” he stressed.
