Tuesday 10 September marks Suicide Prevention Day 2024, a day to raise awareness of the support available to prevent suicide.

Over 700,000 people die each year around the world by suicide, and one single death ripples through families, friends, friends of friends, and communities.

The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action “Start the Conversation”. This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides.

World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). WHO has been a co-sponsor of the day. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented.

Eliminating the social stigma of mental health care and encouraging the search for help are fundamental pieces to prevent a problem that has affected Yucatan for decades: self-inflicted deaths.

This is the opinion of Dr. Arsenio Rosado Franco, director of the Mental Health Institute of Yucatan, and Edgardo Flores Herrera, president of the Yucatecan Association of Suicidology when talking about mental health, stigmas, and deaths by suicide in Yucatan.

Within the framework of World Suicide Prevention Day, which was commemorated on September 10, the expert gives his opinion on this phenomenon that has increased in the state.

In Yucatan territory, this problem has registered an upward trend in a short and recent time.

Suicide had a notable increase in the last four years and more as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

After this event, historical figures of deaths of this type have been recorded, placing Yucatan among the first Mexican states on this topic.

According to Arsenio Rosado Franco, the problem of suicide is first and foremost preventable, but he also claims that it is related to mental health problems or disorders, addictions, and the lack of seeking help, among other factors, which influence suicidal behavior or ideation.
