Yucatan, a key market for car sales in Mexico; more than eight thousand new units sold in 2024

Between January and March 2024, sales of compact, light, and luxury vehicles in Yucatan reached 8,200 units, representing an increase of 22 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

This growth is higher than the national average of 10 percent, reflecting the accelerated expansion of the automotive market in the region, according to data from the Peninsular Association of Automobile Distributors (AMDA).

“The solid economic and population growth of Mérida is a determining factor in the boom in the sale of compact and light vehicles in Yucatan. The state ranked eighth nationally in new car sales during 2023, with more than 30,500 units sold of various brands and models.

This upward trend has continued in the first months of 2024, consolidating Yucatán as a key market in the national automotive industry,” said Enrique Peniche, president of AMDA Peninsular.

He also stressed that the opening of new automotive agencies and the expansion of the brand offering in Mérida have been key factors for the growth of the sector. “The recovery in the manufacturing and supply of new cars has made it possible to meet the growing demand of Yucatecan consumers, who are looking for both traditional vehicles and more environmentally friendly options,” he said.

In this context of growth, the electric and hybrid vehicle market has gained a privileged position in Yucatán. The state is among the top 10 places nationwide in electric car sales, which shows the interest of consumers in more sustainable and ecological options.

The president of AMDA Peninsular highlighted that the good moment that the automotive industry is experiencing in Yucatán is directly related to the security and economic stability that characterizes the state. This has generated an environment of confidence for Yucatecans to invest in the purchase of new vehicles. During the first half of 2024, the growth in car sales in the state was 16.5 percent, exceeding the national average of 12 percent.

The boom in the automotive market in Yucatan is not only limited to conventional vehicles but is also reflected in the increase in sales of electric and hybrid vehicles, which places the state as a benchmark in the adoption of cleaner technologies in transportation.

“The arrival of new brands, the opening of agencies, and consumer interest in sustainable options drive sustained growth in the sector, consolidating Mérida and the state in general as a strategic place in the national automotive industry,” he concluded.
