With a record of 224 infections, an increase of 339% is reported compared to the same cut-off of epidemiological week 34 of last year.
With a total of 224 positive cases of influenza in the 2023-2024 interseasonal period, Yucatán is ranked first nationally in incidence of the respiratory disease, reported the Federal Ministry of Health.
The figure for this season exceeds by 339.22%, that which was had in the 2022-2023 season at the same cut-off (August 26) corresponding to epidemiological week 34 and is close to reaching the total reported at the end of the 2023-2024 seasonal influenza season, which was 243 infections.
In the last month, the increase in positive influenza cases was 211%, going from 72 confirmed cases on July 27 to 224 on August 26.
During this period, cases of respiratory illnesses or Influenza-like Illness/Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (ILI/IRAG) increased by 62%, going from 986 to 1,597, according to information from the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE). So far, there are no confirmed deaths from influenza in the state.
The 2023-2024 interseasonal period began in week 21 (May 4) and will end in week 40 (first week of October). In this period, according to the epidemiological behavior of the disease, a higher number of infections usually occur.
Specialists have reiterated that influenza behaves differently in Yucatan than in the rest of the Republic, and more cases and deaths are usually recorded during the interseasonal period.
It should be remembered that in the 2018-2019 interseasonal period, an outbreak considered “atypical” of influenza occurred between July and September leaving 324 positive cases and 39 deaths.
In the accumulated flu season, up to the cut-off date of August 26, 1,390 positive influenza cases have been confirmed by laboratory testing throughout the country.
