In Yucatán, an innovative company is taking whiskey to a new level by using native corn for production.

Poción Maya, a foreign capital firm incubated in the Yucatán Science Park (PCTY), has begun to export its product to the US market under the name Gran Maizal. This whiskey, made from the ancient nal t’eel corn, has been received with great enthusiasm in the US, with notable success.

The general director of the PCTY, Vanessa Burgos Alonso, highlighted that the project began since its formulation in 2022 and has grown significantly.

Currently, the company is exporting a thousand cases of whiskey, positively impacting 56 communities in Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo through the purchase of endemic corn.

Poción Maya plans to triple its production and export in the next three years, which will also lead to an increase in its workforce, which will go from 24 to more than 50 employees.

In addition, the company collaborates with the Center for Research and Assistance in Technology and Design of the State of Jalisco (Ciatej) and the Scientific Research Center of Yucatán (CICY) in seed conservation.
