Rommel Pacheco will be the new head of the National Sports Commission (CONADE), reported the President-elect of the United Mexican States, Claudia Sheinbaum. The diver had been active and close to Mexican athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and will now be in charge of managing the federated sport for the next six-year term.
Pacheco had taken the lead over competitors such as Miguel Torruco and Moisés Muñoz, former goalkeeper of América, who were also seeking the position still occupied by former athlete Ana Gabriela Guevara.
Pacheco began his political career after retiring from sports life and has become controversial for changing political parties three times, as he was a member of the PRI, then the PAN, and finally MORENA.
Now the Yucatecan manages to position himself in the government of Claudia Sheinbaum, who will take office next October.
For weeks, Rommel Pacheco had begun to form his work team to occupy the CONADE position in case he was required by President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum. At the same time, Torruco and Moisés Muñoz had also managed to put together their formulas to enter the administration of federated sports, if necessary.
Rommel Pacheco’s appointment was one of the last to be announced because it was expected that the participation of Mexican athletes in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, both conventional and Paralympic, would end. This way, a climate of uncertainty would not be created among the athletes who were under the administration of Ana Gabriela Guevara.
His appointment comes after President Lopez Obrador gave his support to Ana Gabriela Guevara and awarded her the bronze medal for enduring criticism against her time as the head of CONADE. The former sprinter had mentioned that she was willing to continue in the position in case Claudia Sheinbaum asked her to, which did not happen.
In the end, the President-elect’s decision was Rommel Pacheco, a former Olympic diver who was a candidate for mayor of Mérida on behalf of Morena and has experience as an athlete in both the Olympic Games and international competitions.
