The 52nd edition of the International Cervantino Festival will be inaugurated by La Guelaguetza because this year’s guests of honor are Brazil and Oaxaca. This year, the largest cultural festival in Latin America will feature 47 shows that will be performed for 17 days.

The International Cervantino Festival will feature the participation of more than 2,200 artists from 24 countries, who will take part in 133 performances of performing arts, 35 visual arts exhibitions, and 49 academic activities, among other cultural activities.

The opening of the 2024 International Cervantino Festival will take place today, Friday, October 11, with a show by La Guelaguetza that is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on the esplanade of the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, located on 28 de septiembre street in Guanajuato.

The reason why La Guelaguetza was chosen as the opening show is because it is a celebration that shows “the diversity and cultural richness of Oaxaca,” details the website of the International Cervantino Festival.

This year, Oaxaca along with Brazil are the guests of honor, so they chose La Guelaguetza to represent the 16 indigenous peoples of the state and Afro-Mexicanism “through a spectacular display of dance, music and traditional clothing” that was created in 1932 as a way of thanking the gods for the harvests.
