Dog owners have found walkers an ally to meet the physical and emotional needs of their pets, since walking helps them control stress and anxiety, according to canine educators.

Walking dogs is not only a recreational activity, but a necessity to guarantee the well-being of the animal, said María Carrera, canine educator.

“Dogs gets used to noises, people, vehicles, and other animals. This makes it a more balanced and confident dog. Even if you don’t go out much, you need to adapt to external stimuli to avoid developing fears or insecurities,” explains Carrera.

In addition to the importance of socialization, Carrera highlights that walks have a direct impact on reducing stress in dogs.

“Physical exercise is essential, but the real benefit comes from the mental exhaustion they experience when sniffing and exploring their environment. This allows them to process information and relax effectively,” says the expert.

In this sense, one of the most important tips that Carrera offers is to allow dogs to use their sense of smell during walks.

“Dogs do not see the world like we do; Its main sense is smell. “If we don’t let them sniff, it’s like they’re deprived of one of their most important capabilities.” This deprivation, he says, can trigger behavioral problems such as anxiety or aggression.

Carrera also points out the need for calm walks, without tension on the leash: “He doesn’t have to walk next to the owner all the time. Ideally, you should explore at your own pace, sniff, and enjoy the surroundings,” he recommends.

It also emphasizes the importance of walks being individual or in small groups, to ensure that each dog receives the necessary attention. The cost of these services in Mérida ranges between 75 and 150 pesos per hour, which have become common in parks and green areas, especially north of the Yucatecan capital, depending on the offers offered by dog walkers.
