Last September, the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) of the Specialty Hospital No. 1 of the National Medical Center (CMN) “Ignacio García Téllez” of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Yucatán, carried out two kidney transplants thanks to the altruism of a family who decided to donate the organs of a 36-year-old patient who died from a cerebrovascular event; which were procured at the General Hospital Zone (HGZ) No. 1 of the IMSS in Campeche.

The two kidneys transferred to the UMAE in Mérida were transplanted to two male patients aged 37 and 38, who are in recovery and under strict medical surveillance.

As part of the multi-organ procurement carried out by multidisciplinary personnel of the Institute in Campeche, two corneas were obtained and sent to the UMAE Specialty Hospital “Dr. Bernardo Sepúlveda Gutiérrez” of the CMN Siglo XXI in Mexico City.

The head of the Clinical Department of the Transplant Unit of the UMAE in Mérida, Dr. Jorge Martínez Ulloa, assured that the procedures are carried out under the institutional transfer protocols; and reiterated his recognition of the coordinated work of Campeche and Yucatán, which will change the lives of other patients.

The UMAE in Mérida, directed by Dr. Roberto Abraham Betancourt Ortiz, has performed 39 transplants so far this year and continues to work to improve the quality of life of its patients, consolidating itself as a reference in transplants in the region.

For his part, Dr. Alonso Juan Sansores Río, head of the IMSS in Yucatán, thanked the work and collaboration between both Decentralized Administrative Operation Bodies, to continue providing patients with alternatives to improve their health and quality of life.
