The president of the Union of Tenants and Vendors of the Municipal Markets “Lucas de Gálvez” and “San Benito”, Felipe Estrella Baas, reported that in both “Mercados,” there is already enough product and food for sale in anticipation of the approaching Day of the Dead at the end of October and beginning of November.

He stated that in both markets, people can find tomato, onion, epazote, red Recado, espelón, banana leaves, and the cans where the traditional Pibes are prepared that are placed on the altars of Hanal Pixán on the Day of the Dead.

He also pointed out that in both markets, people can buy pork, chicken, dough, and lard which are an important part of the preparation of the Pibes according to the “traditions and customs” of the Yucatecan people when the dates approach in which deceased loved ones are remembered.

He added that at “Lucas de Gálvez” and “San Benito” you can also buy flowers, colored candles, votive candles, the bread of the dead, sugar skulls, the traditional yuca with honey, sweet potato, sweet orange, grapefruit, tangerines, jicama to prepare the famous Yucatecan “xe’ek” with habanero chili, among other products and ingredients such as the dough for the new atole of sweet or salty corn that is what gives flavor to the tradition of the faithful deceased that in Yucatan is celebrated from October 31 to November 2.

Finally, Estrella Baas explained that between October 23 and 25, people begin to go in greater numbers to “Lucas de Gálvez” and “San Benito” to buy all the food and products for the altar tables of Hanal Pixán, since October 31 is the day for the memory of deceased children, November 1st for All Saints’ Day, and November 2nd for all the deceased.

He concluded that in both markets people will find everything they need for those dates and at very good prices; which they will not find in commercial chains or in self-service stores where everything is more expensive.
