Thanks to the protocols established for natural disaster situations, Hurricane Milton did not damage the Centenario and Animaya zoos.
Felipe Pacheco Sansores, deputy director of General Public Services, reported that the personnel on duty stayed as long as necessary, and they took measures to protect the animals as soon as the alerts were issued.
He explained that zoos have technical areas designed to protect birds, which are the species most vulnerable to inclement weather.
He added the birds’ cages were not as strong as the felines’. However, all the animals were observed for their behaviors and possible effects.
Reptiles like snakes were among the first to be protected because they can suffer stress from intense sounds.
The biologists and managers stood guard during the hurricane, and no incidents were reported. Only fallen leaves and branches.
The staff was in constant communication to ensure the safety of the animals at all times.
Pacheco Sansores thanked the team for their commitment to safeguarding the animals and announced that the Zoos would resume normal activities on Wednesday, October 9.
