One kilometer of beach disappears on Yucatan coastal strip

In two years, 100 meters of beach disappeared along a kilometer on the eastern side of the Progreso’s traditional boardwalk.

“The sea took away a wide coastal strip, damaged foundations of summer properties, or forced the closure of a beach club restaurant located on 54th Street”, explains Pedro Pablo Silveira Cervera, a well-known promoter of the sports of kitesurfing and windsurfing.

“Little by little, the sea continued its unstoppable advance”, says Silveira Cervera, owner of a beach club business that was frequented by cruise ship passengers arriving at this port, where until two years ago there were about 100 meters of beach and the place was an attraction for foreign tourists and a well-known spot for kitesurfers.

The aforementioned beach club had a restaurant, and it also had aquatic equipment, artifacts, and kayaks that tourists used to enjoy.

“All that is over now, the sea knocked down a palapa, the place was left without a beach, as well as the houses along one kilometer of the coast,” said Pedro Silveira.

“A destructive erosion fell like a curse on the eastern part of the port,” he continued.

“There is no beach anymore, prompt action is urgently needed with the support of the state and federal governments, collaboration, and participation of the owners of the summer properties,” Pedro Pablo Silveira continued.

“There are condominium buildings in that area, and the sea continues to advance,” he emphasized.

Fishing affected by erosion
Not only the summer properties have been affected by erosion, but there are also fishermen who in this octopus season have serious difficulties getting their boats out and putting them in safety when the weather is bad.

In the eroded area, locals have placed Geotubes, bags filled with sand and spurs, in an attempt to stop the erosion that is also spreading to the area of the former Cocoteros Club, where the beach is gone too.
