Resistance, the message of women in rap

The presence of women in the musical genre of rap represents resistance, as indicated by Rebeca Becerril Gutiérrez, a doctoral student in Anthropological Sciences at UADY.

His participation was within the framework of the III Colloquium Socio-anthropological Approaches to Music: Practices, listening and consumption, organized by the Peninsular Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (Cephcis) UNAM. There she spoke about what the incursion of women into a musical genre that is predominantly for men has been like and the challenges they have to face.

“I don’t like to talk about how gender or music doesn’t allow them to enter, it’s rather a whole system that exists and that subtly tells women that their place is in the house and taking care of the children, and well That already puts them at a disadvantage.”

She explained that the entry of women into genres such as rap or trap is a symbol of resistance to what they still cannot access as quickly as men do.

“And those who enter are not so easy because they are exposed to violence that often cannot be reported because if they do then they are left out of the industry.”

He said that women have always existed in rap, trap, and other genres, but that they were simply not mentioned and it is only now that one or another is gaining notoriety.

“Like Cazzu, she is a well-known rag picker, but she is not the only one, there are many more, so we should not just talk about one in 10 men, there have always been women, but they are not talked about.”
