Each of the three states of the Peninsula (Yucatan, Campeche, and Quintana Roo), is releasing their own Health Campaign against Influenza.

In light of this health situation, the Yucatan Ministry of Health began this October the annual campaign to vaccinate against influenza free of charge to risk groups: children from six months to 5 years of age, adults 60 years or older, pregnant women and people from 5 to 59 years of age with comorbidities, such as diabetes.

Additionally, the SSY reminds the population of the following seven measures to prevent influenza and other respiratory diseases:

  1. Wash your hands frequently.
  2. Avoid sudden temperature changes.
  3. Clean and disinfect commonly used objects.
  4. Clean your home and workplace.
  5. Avoid touching your face with dirty hands.
  6. When coughing or sneezing, cover your nose and mouth, even if you wear a face mask.
  7. Stay home if you have a respiratory illness.

The respiratory disease season is worse than that of 2023
In this regard, the SSA informs that, in three weeks, in addition to the 65 cases of influenza, 485 cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) and about 20 cases of Other Respiratory Viruses (OVR) have already been confirmed in Yucatan.

According to the figures, despite the fact that only one cold front has arrived, the 4th that caused rain until Saturday the 19th, in Yucatan this autumn-winter season is worse than that of 2023, because, in week 42 of last year, there were 36 cases of influenza, 392 of ILI/SARI, none of OVR and no deaths from flu.

In total, there are now 570 confirmed cases of respiratory illnesses in Yucatan, an increase of 33%, compared to the 428 recorded in the first three weeks of the 2023 seasonal season. That is 142 additional patients.
