As part of her Government proposals to reduce the so-called “Heat Islands” and green the city, the mayor of Mérida, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, proposes the creation of the so-called “Shadow Islands”, especially in the Historic Center of the city.

These islands are made by expanding the green infrastructure, with new walls, roofs plant facades, and flower pots that could also be added to recover the public space and, at the same time, green it.

The launch of the “One family, one tree” program is also planned because regardless of whether the City Council does its part, citizens will also be encouraged to plant more trees in their cases, even if they are small species like a “bell” to make the city greener.

Another of the actions that the Merida mayor’s office will promote will be the creation of green corridors and walls, which together with the “Shadow Islands” in the center of the city, will shape a great comprehensive strategy to green Mérida and ensure that there is a larger and better wooded.

Likewise, it is expected that the program called “Forest Crusade” will continue to be part of the environmental policies of the Mérida City Council. Through this program, more than 70 thousand trees have been planted in the last year.

At the state level, the goal for 2024 was to plant just over 600,000 new trees throughout the State, and for his part, Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena indicated that during his administration he will seek to plant more than 1,800,000 trees throughout the State. the Yucatecan territory.
