Residents of the Jardines Miraflores neighborhood in the east of the Yucatecan capital have reported on social media a severe wave of robberies of homes and parked vehicles, all over the last week, with similar modus operandi in all cases.

Uninhabited properties and parked vehicles are the target of loiterers who study the movements of the neighbors very carefully and take advantage of the opportunity to commit thefts when they are certain that the properties do not register the movement of people inside or that the vehicles are out of the reach of security cameras.

Some of the residents have already located suspicious people walking the streets of the area to observe the movement in the properties. Some of the inhabitants of the area have even warned them that if they are caught committing an illegal act, they will be arrested and handed over to the police.

It was revealed that this is a group of individuals who, in general, consume illicit substances and travel the streets on foot or by bicycle.

A wave of robberies in the Jardines Miraflores subdivision

Only from Monday, October 7th until Sunday, October 13th, at least two properties were burglarized, one close to the other, in which the thieves took advantage of the absence of the residents to destroy the doors that led to the patios to enter the properties.

On 19th Street, between 20th and 24th, in the same week, two properties whose inhabitants were not present were broken into and robbed. Likewise, on Sunday, October 13th, a resident of the Jardines de Miraflores subdivision reported the theft of money and headphones from inside his parked truck.

According to what was found out in the case of one of the properties stolen on the afternoon of last Monday, October 7th, an attempt was made to file the relevant complaint at the prosecutor’s office in the Fidel Velázquez subdivision, but there they were informed that given the imminent arrival of hurricane “Milton”, there was no staff to take the complaint nor a system to capture the statement.

The complainants gave up because it seemed that the alleged thief was not able to take the loot (cell phones, laptops, money, video game consoles, and other electronic devices) that he had already prepared to take in at least four sports bags. Everything was left in a raid, various damages and it is still unknown if the thief took anything of value.

In this case, neighbors noticed the suspicious behavior of the alleged thief, who when he was discovered chose to leave quickly, carrying a backpack and abandoning the loot that the witnesses managed to recover.

Security cameras captured the alleged thief

The individual of thin build and long hair was wearing flip-flops, shorts, and a T-shirt. The bleeding injuries that he suffered on his knees when breaking the back door of the property gave him away to the witnesses who realized what was happening. In addition, a security camera captured the subject when he fled.

Residents have increased surveillance in the area hoping that the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) will reinforce police presence to discourage robberies.
