The young Yucatecan filmmaker Mario Galván Reyes has released one of his most recent audiovisual pieces through the digital platform YouTube. This is Roza, Tumba y Quema (Slash, Knockdown, and Burn), material that seeks to vindicate ancestral knowledge, which is increasingly falling behind.

The young creator explained that this piece of his authorship, which can now be seen for free on the YouTube platform, was possible thanks to the fact that at the time (2022) it was sponsored by the Program to Stimulate Artistic Creation and Development (PECDA), granted by the federal government through the Ministry of Culture, formerly Conaculta.

“It was our turn to support; It was 50 thousand pesos to carry out the production as a recognition of the program in its audiovisual media section,” he commented.

Galván Reyes said that he presented the medium-length film as fiction. However, the final product focused on recreating real and naturalistic scenarios of rural people’s activities through the theatricality of the actors, who, through observation, sought to reclaim the primary activity in Yucatán.

He commented that the film, in addition to portraying land uses in the entity, also touches on important public health issues, such as the high rate of diabetes. He assured that they also sought to promote ancestral cultivation schemes, like the Mayan milpa.

He indicated that the film portrays life in rural environments and criticizes real estate developments that have displaced this type of activity or knowledge rooted in the region’s culture.

He explained that to write the script, he carried out research, consulting sources from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the collection of the University of Chapingo, and testimonies from people from the Indigenous peoples.

He commented that, after the investigation process was completed and receiving the resource, they began filming, followed by post-production.

Regarding the possibility of creating without government support, he pointed out that there are now tools that can facilitate the work of novice filmmakers, since cinematographic pieces can be generated from mobile devices, such as cell phones.

Galván Reyes has managed to get his audiovisual piece Diente de Leche to one of the most important film festivals in the world, the Cannes Festival, which is why he invited you to watch Roza, Tumba y Quema for free on YouTube.
