Together with the citizens, the Mérida City Council will generate green corridors like never before that contribute to improving the quality of life in the Yucatecan capital, Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada said today, Saturday.

“We will consolidate the infrastructure in parks and increase the trees in cycle paths and walkways, among other spaces, as part of a great strategy to lower the temperature in the city,” said the municipal president.

Likewise, the first mayor highlighted attention to the network of green corridors in all parts of the city, on Avenida Mérida 2000, Ciudad Caucel-Santa Fe, Brisas, Oriente, and Sur.

“Throughout Mérida, we will integrate natural and sustainable elements into the urban environment, prioritize the development of green areas and ecological corridors, and create functional spaces that promote recreation, social interaction, and environmental education,” said Cecilia Patrón.

To promote tree planting, the City Council will launch programs such as “A family, one tree” and “Aerial pots”, planting days at strategic points, training in environmental matters, and strengthening the care of municipal parks and gardens.

Cecilia Patrón recalled that trees and plants improve air quality, contribute to increasing biodiversity by being home to fauna, and mitigate heat.

“We will ensure the sustainability of the strategy through citizen collaboration with a network of environmental volunteers from companies, schools, and, in general, civil society,” he added.

A way to encourage participation will be the recognition of Environmentally Responsible Companies, she said

“Every citizen can contribute by placing a tree at home; companies, creating green walls and gardens in their facilities,” he exemplified.

“We want each inhabitant to make this strategy their own to make Mérida the greenest of cities,” he stated.

According to the City Council, Mérida has just over 700 parks and green areas, one ecological reserve with around 11,900 hectares of surface, and a green infrastructure of 6.2 square meters per inhabitant.
