The president of the CicloTurixes civil association, Everardo Flores Gómez, asked the municipality of Mérida to prioritize the maintenance of existing cycle paths, especially given the uncertainty about the construction of new infrastructure in 2025.
According to the activist, while the cycle path on Paseo de Montejo stands out for its quality, many others are in deterioration, such as those located on Canek Avenue and 86th Avenue. These spaces lack maintenance, which causes motorcyclists and motorists to invade them. , affecting the safety of cyclists.
On the other hand, Flores Gómez mentioned that the cycle path that connects with the community of Xmatkuil is one of the few that is maintained in good condition, but he highlighted that the rest need immediate improvements to guarantee its correct use.
Given the possible disappearance of the En Bici program, the activist asked for transparency about the resources allocated to this initiative. He proposed that the money invested continue to be used to improve cycling infrastructure instead of allocating it to patching, a recurring practice of the municipal administration.
Flores Gómez highlighted that Mérida needs to strengthen its commitment to sustainable mobility. Ensuring functional and safe cycle lanes not only encourages cycling but also contributes to a healthier and more sustainable city.
The call focuses on preventing the abandonment of cycle paths and ensuring that resources are invested in projects that benefit cyclists and the community in general.
