Sefotur indicated that if it is carried out at the end of the month, it would help reverse the low influx of visitors to archaeological sites in the state.
To reverse the low influx of visitors to the State’s archaeological sites, the Secretariat for Tourism Development (Sefotur) is rushing the steps to reopen the Dzibilchaltún area at the end of this month, which they consider will allow the numbers to rise at the end of 2024.
Darío Flota Ocampo, head of Sefotur, said that they are already making arrangements with the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the Board of Cultural and Tourist Services Units of the State of Yucatán (Cultur) so that at the end of this month Dzibilchaltún reopens its doors to the public and helps increase the arrival of tourists by the end of the year.
Flota Ocampo highlighted that Dzibilchaltún is one of the most popular archaeological sites for tourists, particularly due to its location between Mérida and Progreso, which is ideal for visitors arriving by cruise ship, and if it is opened, it will be an incentive for the winter holiday season.
According to the INAH, during 2023 this archaeological site received 64,808 visitors, which represented 2.12 percent of the total at the state level, which was 3 million 57 thousand 139 access records. The site has been closed since January 30 of this year.
