Sheinbaum assured that the reforestation program would not only help the environment but would also generate employment and reduce migration and poverty.
In her first participation in the G20 summit, President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed investing 1 percent of the military spending of the participating countries in a reforestation program similar to Sembrando Vida, which has been running in Mexico for five years.
In her speech at the working table called Fight against hunger and poverty, Sheinbaum pointed out that with this proposal, up to 24 billion dollars would be available to subsidize up to six million tree planters in the world.
This would create an option to generate temporary employment, reduce poverty and migration, and generate a benefit for the environment.
In his speech, he insisted that it is “absurd” and “nonsensical” that there is more spending on weapons than on addressing poverty or climate change.
Sheinbaum explained that in Mexico the program Sembrando Vida was established, similar to the proposal made at the G20, in which 1.7 billion dollars are invested each year to support 439 thousand families in Mexico, and 40 thousand in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
