President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said that Mexico will attend the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to defend the Fourth Transformation project and to propose attention to the most needy in the world, as well as the vindication of women’s rights.
“We are going to defend what our project represents: and also to propose, for example: what would happen if 1 percent of the arms spending were allocated to attend to the most needy in the world? (sic…) And that is what we have to claim in the face of wars, better to use the resources for the well-being of the most humble in the world, and to reorient the budget so that it serves the development of the country.
“So, that is what we are going to present to the G20 with great pride, because of what Mexico represents in the world today, and also to claim the rights of women and how Mexico has advanced in all this,” she said at her morning conference.
She explained that during the G20, –which will take place on November 18 and 19 with the attendance of 19 countries and two regional organizations: the African Union and the European Union–, she will share the experience of the humanist model in which the rights of the people are prioritized, through salary increases and the implementation of social programs such as the Pension for the Well-being of Older Adults or Sembrando Vida.
“In many Latin American countries it was stated that ‘they could not increase salaries because that would be inflationary’, and the example of Mexico shows that this is not the case. And, at the same time, some very important social programs: Pension for Older Adults.” “But we are going to put the Sembrando Vida program at the center because it is a program that reduces poverty, generates regional and local development, and reduces migration because it strengthens the relationship with the land and with the productive link of agriculture and tree planting, and at the same time, it has benefits for capturing carbon and reducing the impacts of climate change,” Sheinbaum continued.
She explained that, if a percentage of what is dedicated to arms, was destined for a program like Sembrando Vida, the causes that generate migration would be addressed and peace would be sown. She asserted that our nation attends the multilateral meeting, from a relationship of equals and never of subordination, since Mexico is a free, independent, and sovereign country.
“I am convinced that there will be a good relationship with the United States. And when problems arise, we will face them with dignity, with pride, and knowing who we represent, which is our great people and this great nation that we have.”
The president pointed out that the bilateral relationship with the United States is very important, so bilateral dialogue will be worked on.
“And at the time of the review, because it is not a renegotiation, of the review of the Treaty (between Mexico, the United States, and Canada) we also have working groups that have been working for a long time, not only with Mexican businessmen, but with businessmen from the United States who have investments in Mexico and investments… Mexican businessmen who have investments in the United States,” she concluded.
