22 public transportation stops in Mérida will now offer free internet service. This initiative is part of a project to transform 100 public spaces in Mérida, enhancing their image, design, lighting, roofing, and network connectivity.
This effort prioritizes social justice and innovative design, optimizing transportation areas managed by the Mérida City Council for the benefit of the student community and all residents of the municipality.
Mayor Cecilia Patrón visited one of the renovated stops, accompanied by students from the Campus of Social Sciences of the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY). Together, they observed the improvements and listened to user feedback.
“It is exciting to see how these changes improve the lives of citizens,” said a UADY student. “It is an example of how collaboration between government and society can generate a positive impact to benefit the community.”
Patrón Laviada emphasized that improving these spaces demonstrates a commitment to university youth, strengthening social justice through innovation, and reducing the digital divide by ensuring equal access to technology and information. The project promotes inclusion, and citizen participation, and improves the quality of life for all by creating safe, healthy, and accessible public spaces.
“We want Mérida to be a model of a sustainable and equitable city, where everyone has access to opportunities and quality services,” she said.
Mayor Patrón highlighted that rehabilitating the bus stops, making them more comfortable, and equipping them with technological tools will provide peace of mind for the student community while waiting for transportation. The stops will protect users from rain and sun and enhance their safety.
“We want your only concern to be studying and fulfilling your dreams. While you prepare for a better future, we work to ensure your present is in environments that contribute to your comprehensive development. That is why we also improve the areas surrounding the campus, patching and lighting the streets, so your current experience is complete and of quality,” she added.
Finally, Cecilia Patrón invited citizens to participate in this process by taking care of the infrastructure. “Together, we can build a more just and prosperous Mérida for all,” she concluded.
